Chap. 5. MARSH/POND SOUTHEAST OF THE LINCOLN CITY SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT

***************************************************************************

5-A. INTRODUCTION AND STUDY AREA

Approx. Center of Site: 44 55.7' N, 124 00.1' W Location: Township 7S, Range 11W, SW 1/4 of Section 26 Area Studied: ? Habitat(s) Studied: freshwater marsh/pond Elevation: <20 ft (<6 m) Minimum Distance to Coastline: 1.0 mi (1.6 km). These three observations are all the records that we have that were made through December 1992; they have been double-checked against the original field notes. This permanent marsh/pond is shown as a body of water in the 1984 Lincoln City 7.5' quadrangle and is within the city limits of Lincoln City. In the 1970's, this site was hard to observe because of all the brush around it. Although we only have three incidental observations, they are useful because they indicate that this site may be used by Wood Ducks and American Bitterns. Although they may be fairly common, bitterns are secretive and are rarely observed in Lincoln County, so their status is unclear. ***************************************************************************

5-B. RESULTS

Observations by Range Bayer (RB) and Phil Pickering (PP) include: 02/03/74 (RB). At least one Great Blue Heron. 03/23/74 (0920 PST)(RB). 3 male and 7 female Wood Ducks involved in courtship displays, 3 Great Blue Herons. 09/16/84 (PP). 1 American Bittern, 5 Wood Ducks. ***************************************************************************

6-A. INTRODUCTION

These are all the records that we have that were made through December 1992. All these records have been double-checked against the original field notes for accuracy. All observations were by Range Bayer. ***************************************************************************

6-B. STUDY AREA AND METHODS

Approx. Center of Site: 44 55.6' N, 124 00.6' W Location: Township 7S, Range 11W, NE 1/4 of Section 34 Area Studied: ? Habitat(s) Studied: estuarine creek Elevation: sea level Minimum Distance to Coastline: 0.4 mi (0.6 km). Schooner Creek flows into North Siletz Bay just west of the Highway 101 Bridge over Schooner Creek; however, the area included in this Chapter is the portion of Schooner Creek that was visible with binoculars eastward from the east side of this Bridge; this was a distance of about 0.25 mi (0.4 km). This observation point was obnoxious because of the high volume and closeness of traffic. The purpose of Bayer's observations in December 1973-May 1974 was to census nonflying Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets, but, because there were so few birds, he also sometimes noted the presence of other birds. Each census took 5 min or less, and Bayer also usually estimated average windspeed in miles/hr with a hand-held Dwyer Wind Meter and recorded if it was precipitating. ***************************************************************************

6-C. RESULTS

6-C-1. HUMAN DISTURBANCE People or their dogs were recorded several times during observations (Table 6.1), and Bayer sometimes may have not recorded their presence. Further, traffic noise was unpredictable and sometimes loud, which may have caused birds to avoid this area. 6-C-2. BIRD PRESENCE It is doubtful if the general lack of birds at this site was due to inclement weather, as it was only stormy on 3 February 1974 (Table 6.1). Great Blue Herons were rare, and Great Egrets were never recorded during these daylight censuses. But there were few days of observations (Table 6.1), and the amount of human disturbance during the day seemed considerable. Bayer suspects that Great Blue Herons and other birds may have used this site during darkness, as they do at Yaquina Estuary at highly disturbed sites. Besides Great Blue Herons, the only two other species recorded here were Spotted Sandpipers and Belted Kingfishers (Table 6.1). ***************************************************************************

Chap. 7. NORTH SILETZ BAY

***************************************************************************

7-A. INTRODUCTION

Observations made through December 1992 are given here; one more recent observation was also discovered and included. All these records have been double-checked against the original reports for accuracy. ***************************************************************************

7-B. STUDY AREA

Approx. Center of Site: 44 55.3' N, 124 01.1' W Location: Township 7S, Range 11W, Section 34 Area Studied: ? Habitat(s) Studied: estuary (intertidal & channel) Elevation: sea level Minimum Distance to Coastline: 0 mi (0 km). Although many people may not divide Siletz Bay into two parts, the Cutler City Peninsula is a natural landmark that divides Siletz Bay into North and South portions. An important reason for doing so is that these portions differ significantly physically and in their bird communities. North Siletz Bay is much more influenced by the ocean and is sandier, but South Siletz Bay is more influenced by freshwater outflows from the Siletz River and Drift Creek and consequently has finer sediments (Rauw 1975:117). Although it is beyond the scope of this report to examine in detail the differences in bird communities between North and South Siletz Bay, they exist and are significant. Both Phil Pickering and Bayer defined the North Bay as the portion of Siletz Bay north of an imaginary line drawn west from the Josephine Young Memorial Park at the western tip of the Cutler City Peninsula. Birds on the west side of Salishan Spit north of this imaginary line are also included. ***************************************************************************

7-C. BAYER'S METHODS

From December 1973 through May 1974, Bayer conducted 87 censuses of nonflying Great Blue Herons and Great Egrets during seven days (Table 7.2). He used 7 x 35 binoculars and a 20x spotting scope from an observation point along the roadside just south of the Highway 101 bridge over Schooner Creek. Because there were so few birds, he also sometimes noted the presence of other birds (which are recorded in Table 7.3). Each census took 20 min or less, and Bayer also often estimated average wind speed in miles/hr with a hand-held Dwyer Wind Meter and recorded if it was precipitating (Table 7.2). The wind speed at Bayer's observation point may have been different than out on North Bay where the birds were. From 28 November 1981 through 8 April 1982, Bayer used a 20x spotting scope and 7 x 35 binoculars to make 11 censuses of nonflying waterbirds along the roadside just south of the Highway 101 bridge over Schooner Creek (Table 7.1). He counted birds during a single sweep of North Bay, but he did not count shorebirds and usually also did not count Belted Kingfishers or crows, although he did include nonflying gulls on the west side of Salishan Spit. Unfortunately, Bayer did not record the starting nor the ending time of many of his waterbird censuses (Table 7.1). But he tried to census during high tides (i.e., 3 hr or more from low tide), and it is his recollection that his censuses took less than 15-20 min each. ***************************************************************************

7-D. PICKERING'S METHODS

Pickering made 49 censuses of waterbirds and shorebirds from the Taft City Boat Dock and also from the roadside just south of the Highway 101 bridge over Schooner Creek. From 13 April through 14 August 1982, he counted birds just with binoculars and from 12 September 1982 through 11 December 1985 he also used his 22x spotting scope (Table 7.1). It is important to note that it is not possible to census small birds (i.e., shorebirds) with only binoculars from these two observations points, so some of the smaller birds may have been missed during his observations with only binoculars. Pickering observed birds during a single sweep of North Bay, but he did not count Belted Kingfishers or crows and may have often overlooked Great Blue Herons and Killdeer. He usually estimated numbers of gulls and small shorebirds but individually counted other birds. Unfortunately, Pickering did not record the ending time for all his censuses, but the duration for those that he did was usually about 30 min. However, he may have rounded off the starting and ending times of his censuses to the nearest quarter or half hour. His censuses took longer than Bayer's because he made observations from two observations points and he censused all waterbirds. Pickering generally observed birds within 3 hr of predicted low tide (Table 7.1). Pickering did not record the presence of people or dogs. ***************************************************************************

7-E. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

7-E-1. HUMAN DISTURBANCE In 1973-1974, Bayer noted that people were often on or around North Bay (Table 7.2), perhaps because the sandflats were easy to walk on without sinking. He noted shrimpers (fishermen using a shrimp "gun" to extract mud/sand shrimp for fish bait), fishermen, and, on 18 May 1974, people playing baseball out on North Bay near Cutler City (Table 7.2). Further, Bayer several times (including the afternoon of 3 February 1974) observed people walking from Cutler City unleash their dogs, which often proceeded to chase gulls and other birds from North Bay. Since Bayer did not routinely census the number of people on or along North Bay during his censuses in Table 7.2, people were present much often than his records indicate. Unfortunately, Bayer did not census people in his later censuses and Pickering did not census people either (Table 7.1), so the presence and abundance of people at North Bay is less clear than for birds. For some birds, the presence of certain kinds of people may have been beneficial; crows and gulls were attracted to sites where clammers or shrimpers had been digging because crows and gulls fed on broken clams and other food items brought to the surface. However, all birds avoided people. Although researchers may wish to study and observe birds at North Bay, researchers need to also record the number of people and dogs and their activities because people and dogs can be a significant factor affecting bird presence, distribution, and abundance at North Siletz Bay. 7-E-2. TOTAL SPECIES 51 taxa of water and shorebirds were recorded here (Table 7.4). 7-E-3. BROWN PELICANS Brown Pelicans were extraordinarily abundant at North Siletz Bay in September and October 1982 (Table 7.1a). Similarly, the peak abundance of pelicans at Yaquina Estuary occurred in 1982 at the same time (Bayer unpubl. data). 7-E-4. OVERLOOKED SPECIES Pickering may have missed Great Blue Herons and Killdeer because he was mainly interested in other species. But up to 13 Great Blue Herons were counted, although they were often absent in late March and May during their nesting season (Tables 7.1b and 7.2). Great Egrets were not recorded, although they were looked for. Raptors that forage at intertidal areas are easy to miss because they may be regularly present for only a brief time, or, like Bald Eagles, spend an average of about 90% of their time perched at or adjacent to intertidal areas (Bayer 1987) so that they are too inactive to be spotted. The only two raptors recorded here were the Bald Eagle and Osprey, but Bayer suspects that Peregrine Falcons and Merlins may also have sometimes been present at North Siletz Bay. Like raptors, Belted Kingfishers often spend a lot of time perched adjacent to intertidal areas and are also difficult to census because they are small and inconspicuous. Neither Bayer nor Pickering made a special effort to census them, so they are undoubtedly more common than our censuses would indicate. Crows were rarely censused (Table 7.1h), but they are a very important member of the intertidal bird community in Lincoln County, and, in Bayer's opinion, may have more of an impact than shorebirds during much of the year. Ravens were not recorded and are rare in intertidal areas of Lincoln County, although they are sometimes present in adjacent upland areas. 7-E-5. TIDAL CONDITION It is not within the scope of this report to determine how the presence or abundance of birds changed with changing tides. ***************************************************************************

8-A. INTRODUCTION, STUDY AREA, RESULTS, AND DISCUSSION

Approx. Center of Site: 44 55.1' N, 124 00.7' W Location: Township 7S, Range 11W, SE 1/4 of Section 34 Area Studied: ? Habitat(s) Studied: marsh/field Elevation: <20 ft (<6 m) Minimum Distance to Coastline: 0.7 mi (1.1 km). 8-A-1. NORTH OF 63RD STREET This site is just west of the Pacific Power electric substation along the north side of 63rd Street, starting about 0.1 mi (0.2 km) west of the junction of 63rd Street and Highway 101. In 1994, there is a narrow strip of trees along the north side of the street, but a marsh/field is just north of the trees. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) did not include this site in Harrison (1990:14-15). The only record we have for this site is an observation by Mark Elliott on 29 April 1988. He reported one breeding-plumaged adult Stilt Sandpiper (which is a rarity previously only reported in fall in Lincoln County, Bayer 1992), two Greater Yellowlegs, and 10 Common Snipe. Elliott's details for the Stilt Sandpiper were that it had yellowish legs, a bill thicker than those of a yellowlegs, and dark central tail feathers and wide bands on the tail diagnostic of a Stilt Sandpiper. He noted that plants had grown considerably at this site between his observation and 1992. 8-A-2. SOUTH OF 63RD STREET This site is just west of Lumbermen's on the south side of 63rd Street, starting at about 0.1 mi (0.2 km) west of the junction of 63rd Street and Highway 101. The USFWS classifies this area as a E2EM wetland (Estuarine, intertidal, emergent [salt marsh])(Harrison 1990:14-15). It doesn't appear to be included in ODFW (1978). This area is contiguous with the part of Drift Creek Meadows west of Highway 101 (Chap. 9), but is not visible from Highway 101 because of the buildings along the west side of the Highway. In November 1994, Bayer noted that marsh grasses were thick and tall at this site, so that observations of birds amongst the grasses would often be impossible. Our only record for this site was by Phil Pickering, who heard a Virginia Rail on 17 March 1984.
