Bayer Research: Not-for-Profit Since 1987

During 1976-1984, Range (Richard) Bayer of Bayer Research was employed as a seasonal fish culturist with Oregon Aqua-Foods (Newport, Oregon), a private salmon hatchery that is now defunct. During that time he became familiar with hatchery salmon rearing and releases. As an employee, he also studied bird concentrations in Yaquina Estuary after hatchery releases (see Bayer 1986e in Papers) and bird predation at hatchery ponds.

Bayer was also contracted as a part-time consultant to census waterbirds during 1986-1987 (part of the results are in Bayer and Lowe 1988 in Papers). This was his only experience as a consultant, and, as a result of that experience, he decided not work again as a consultant.

Since 1987, Bayer Research does not seek or receive grants, contracts, or employment to conduct research.

Experience

Bayer graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Biology from Washington State University in 1969. As an honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran (1969-1971), Bayer has a firm belief in the importance and responsibility of citizens being involved in and monitoring governmental actions.

Starting with his graduate studies at Oregon State University in 1972, Bayer has conducted ecological field research about birds, fish, marine mammals, eelgrass, and dragonflies. In 1976, he graduated with a nonthesis Master of Science degree in Zoology from Oregon State University. He has analyzed much of his field research and published 30+ papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals (see Papers). He has also written articles for other publications (see Papers).

Employment experience after his graduate studies includes his employment for Oregon Aqua-Foods during 1976-1984, in a nonresearch job during 1990-1994, and as a seasonal ranger at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (Lincoln County, Oregon) in the summer of 1995. Since the fall of 1995, he has been employed in a job unrelated to research.

Bayer is a life member of the Society for Northwestern Vertebrate Biology and Wilson Ornithological Society. He is also a member of Northwest Scientific Association, American Ornithologist's Union, Pacific Seabird Group, and several other ornithological groups.

Since 1980, Bayer has also been the volunteer editor of the Sandpiper, a newsletter of Yaquina Birders & Naturalists, a group based in Lincoln County. He has also written field note columns about bird occurrence in Lincoln County for over 15 years as well as other articles and columns about natural history for the Sandpiper.

Bayer is also the owner of Gahmken (pronounced gahm' ken) Press, which has published Journal of Oregon Ornithology and Yaquina Studies in Natural History (formerly Studies in Oregon Ornithology). All of Journal of Oregon Ornithology and issues of Studies in Oregon Ornithology that have been converted to HTML are available for free on the Internet. Neither of them have paid for the cost of printing.

Bayer has applied his scientific experience in research and analysis to tsunami preparation as well as issues about a heliport, airboats, shipbreaking, and a proposed LNG facility at Coos Bay (see Web Pages).
