The Search for David Lufkin and Caroline Kelsey,Parents of Susan Josephine (Dudley) TitusBy Connie Lenzen |
Page 3, Caroline Elizabeth Kelsey
No birth or marriage entry for any Kelsey is found in the Princeton, Massachusetts vital records. [1]
The entire 1865 Princeton census was searched. No Kelsey or Lufkin. [2]
While this does not prove that Caroline Kelsey was born someplace besides Princeton, it leads one to believe that other locations should be searched.
Indexes to Kelsey family history books at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City were reviewed. A Nathan Kelsey family from Clinton, Connecticut had a daughter named Caroline Elizabeth, born 11 April 1839. A second Caroline is attributed to this family, born 1848 and died 1854, but no mention is made of the death of the 1839 Caroline. [3] It is not known if this family relates to "our" Caroline Kelsey, but it is worthy of additional research.

Nathan Kelsey (James 986, Nathan 381, Solomon132, John 34, John 6, William 1), probably only son and youngest child of James Kelsey and Lydia Buell, was born about 1811 or 12, at Killingworth (Clinton); died Nov. 20, 1874. He married, Apr. 11, 1838, at place of birth, Mary Hull, born May 26, 1817; died Jan. 14, 1888; daughter of Oliver Hull and Clarissa Brown. Children: 9 (Kelsey), seven sons and two daughters; probably born at Clinton. 3378 1 Caroline Elizabeth, born Apr 11, 1839 3379 ii John 3380 iii George S., born 1845 or 46; died Mar. ---, 1929, at Clinton. 3381 iv Edwin R., born 1847; died Oct. 22, 1870. He married, Dec. 2, 1874, Fanny Augur (Guilford Records), born 1853 or 54. 3382 v Caroline, born 1848; died Mar. 1, 1854 3383 vi Andrew J., born July 15, 1849 or 50; died Sept. 7, 1933. 3384 vii Marshall, born 1851; died Sept. 18 or 21, 1854 3385 viii Wallace, born Nov. 10, 1854; died Sept. 11, 1858 3386 ix Oliver, [in pen, died Dec. 16, 1948 - New Haven, Ct.] Data on this family are very contradictory, and it is only by careful study from all angles that we have been able to piece the records together. We are not sure that the sons John and Oliver are properly placed. Evidence shows that there was a son born May 8, 1860, but which, we have no way of knowing. Unless more definite information is furnished before going to press, the record given here will have to be accepted for what it is worth. Authorities: Clinton Church Records; Aaron G. Hurd's List of Deaths; Joseph Jonathan Kelsey (No. 3805). |
Marilyn Roberston (tglyf@aol.com) , a descendant of Edwin R. Kelsey and Fanny Augur contacted me in 2004. She has proof that Edwin R. Kelsey, born 27 June 1847 in Guilford, Connecticut and who married Fanny Augur was the son of William Kelsey and Elizabeth Wilcox. Further, he died in 1911, not 1870 as listed above. Her sources include Edwin Kelsey's obituary, William Kelsey's family bible, and Edwin Kelsey's mother's obituary.
In genealogy, when we find conflicting evidence like this, it makes us question all of the other parts of the genealogy. It points out the need to locate documents that either prove or disprove the information.
The 1860 Clinton census shows the Nathan Kelsey family. There is no daughter Caroline, but there is a one-month-old infant. Mary E. Kelsey, the mother of the family, is 43 years old, and her next in age child is 12 years old. It is possible that this was a "change of life" child, but it is also possible that the infant is a grand-child.
