Spam Filtering

This page gives instructions on how to filter messages that our spam filter has tagged as spam (*****SPAM*****). There are two options for handling these messages:

Please note that the following instructions only stop messages that our filter has tagged as spam (*****SPAM*****). These instructions will not help you filter spam that has not been tagged as spam by our filter.

If we do not have instructions for your specific version, you may find that the instructions we have are close enough. If we do not have instructions for any version of your mail reader, or if the instructions we have posted do not work for your mail reader, please send an email to support@OregonVOS.net and include the name and exact version number of the mail reader you are using.

Please Read The Following

WARNING: Because our spam filter is not 100% perfect and will most likely label some legitimate email as spam, we recommend that you create a separate spam folder. If you choose to delete all messages tagged as spam, please be aware that you may be deleting legitimate messages that were accidentally tagged as spam by our filter and that Online Services may not be able to recover any messages that you have deleted.

Instructions for filtering messages tagged as spam (*****SPAM*****)

Microsoft Outlook Express 6
Eudora 5
Netscape 7

Microsoft Outlook Express 6

  1. If you are going to save all tagged spam to a spam folder, you will need to create a spam folder before continuing (you do not need to do this step if you are going to delete all tagged spam):
    • Click on your Inbox
    • Under the File menu click on Folder and then click on New (this should open the Create Folder window)
    • Click on 'Local Folders' in the folder tree in the box labelled 'Select the folder in which to create the new folder'
    • Type a name for your spam folder in the 'Folder name' box at the top. The name should be related to spam, such as 'spam' or 'spam folder'
    • Click the OK button
  2. Under the Tools menu, click on Message Rules and then click on Mail. If the Message Rules window opens then click on the 'New' button, which should open the New Mail Rule window. If the New Mail Rule window is already open, continue on to the next step.
  3. Under 'Select the Conditions for your rule' check the box labelled 'Where the Subject line contains specific words'
  4. Under 'Select the Actions for your rule'
    • If you are going to save all messages tagged as spam to a spam folder, check the box labelled 'Move it to the specified folder'
    • If you are going to delete all messages tagged as spam, check the box labelled 'Delete it'
  5. Under 'Rule Description'
    • Click on the link 'contains specific words' (the Type Specific Words window should open) and in the top box labelled 'Type specific words or a phrase' type the following: *****SPAM*****   Click the Add button and then click the OK button.
    • If you are saving all tagged spam to a spam folder, click on the 'specified' link (the Move window should open) and click on the spam folder you created above and then click the OK button.
  6. Under 'Name of the rule' type a name for the new rule we are creating (e.g. Spam Filter).
  7. Click the OK button at the bottom of the New Mail Rule window.
  8. If the Message Rules window is showing, click the OK button at the bottom of the window.

Eudora 5

There does not appear to be a way to automatically delete messages tagged as spam in Eudora 5. The workaround is to move the messages to the Trash and then set Eudora to delete Trash on exit.

  1. Under the Tools menu click on Filters (the Filters window should open up).
  2. Click on the 'New' button at the bottom of the window.
  3. Under the Match header on the right side of the window
    • Check the Incoming box (the Outgoing and Manual box should be unchecked)
    • In the Header box choose Subject:
    • In the box to the right of the 'contains' box type the following: *****SPAM*****
    • Under the 'ignore' box, leave the Header box and the box to the right of 'contains' empty
  4. Click on the down arrow in the first box under Action and select 'Transfer To'
    • To save the messages to a spam folder, click on the box next to 'Transfer To' and select 'New' (a New Mailbox window should open). Type a name for your spam folder (such as spam or spam folder). DO NOT check the 'Make it a folder' box. Click OK.
    • To move the messages to the Trash, click on the box next to 'Transfer To' and select 'Trash'.
  5. Close the Filter window by clicking on the X in the upper right hand corner of the window and click on 'Yes' when asked to save your changes.
  6. If you chose to move your tagged spam messages to the Trash
    • Under the Tools menu click on Options
    • In the Options window, scroll down and click on Miscellaneous
    • Check the box labelled 'Empty Trash when exiting'
    • Click OK

Netscape 7

  1. Under the Tools menu click on Message Filters (the Message Filters window should open).
  2. Click on the New button (the Filter Rules window should open)
  3. In the Filter name box type a name for this filter (such as 'spam filter')
  4. In the box to the right of 'contains' type the following: *****SPAM*****
  5. If you want to move the tagged spam to a spam folder
    • Under the 'Perform this action' header, click on the 'New Folder' button to the right (the New Folder window should open)
    • In the Name box, type a name for your spam folder (such as 'spam' or 'spam folder')
    • Under 'Create as a subfolder of' click on the down arrow and choose your email address and click on 'choose this for the parent'
    • Click the OK button
  6. If you want to automatically delete all tagged spam
    • Under the 'Perform this action' header click on down arrow next to 'Move to folder' and select 'Delete the message'
  7. Click the OK button at the bottom of the Filter Rules window. Click the OK button at the bottom of the Message Filters window.
