Why a fjord? I'd always admired fjord horses,
with their distinctive appearance, coupled with that drafty
power and easy athleticism. These primitively marked fjord
horses are quite visually striking. I think of them as my pocket drafts!! Their markings
and personalities remind me a lot of my beloved
donkeys which have white muzzles and are thoughtful creatures
too.
I had begun looking for some mares to drive, so my fjord
adventure officially started when I went up to Don and Lisa Eckhardt's
Driving
Center in Snohomish,
WA fall of 2004 and had the privilege to meet and drive some of
their resident fjords. I was a goner from that
moment!

I'd often heard about their great dispositions from other fjord
owners (many of them donkey owners as well!). To meet
a fjord is to love and covet one and
next thing I know - I finally had my own fjord, Elska (with much enabling from
Dave and Pam McWethy -
formerly owner of Camptown Harness). It couldn't
stop there, because I wanted to drive a pair and eventually
participate in CDE's, and thus the adventure began! It's
the journey, not the destination that is important after all!
I ended up in British Columbia with
Orville and Anita Unrau,
Anvil's Acres. I so fell in love with the mare Judit I
bought from them that I went back and bought two of her full
sisters, Jansy and Marit.
Please visit my
golden (and gray) girls below, also there
are more photo's being
added all the time as our adventures continue.
Fjords, like donkeys, are the proverbial potato chip - you can't
have just one!
Drive on!

Elska means LOVE in Norwegian - and she really lives up to her name! I
pronounce it like it looks - "eL - Ska". Her color is
brown dun or Brunnblakk in Norwegian. She traveled from New Hampshire to Oregon in December of 2004. She was owned by Pam and
David McWethy.
Elska has been driven single and in multiples. She has
a big motor and can really travel. She has also served as a therapy
horse for the disabled where she received an award. She is a patient and kind mare.
Elska has a new co-owner, Kathy. They are going to have fun having
adventures together.

Judit is the Norwegian form of Judith. I pronounce
it "You-dit". Her
color is brown dun or Brunnblakk in Norwegian. This lovely mare was bred and trained by Orville and
Anita Unrau, of Anvil Acres. They have successfully campaigned Judit in
Combined driving events as a pair horse with her brother Herger.
She is a
beautiful girl, with a wonderful sweet disposition. She is a full
sister to Jansy and Marit. Many thanks to
the Unrau's for the opportunity of purchasing this fine mare!

Jansy is pronounced "Yan-see". Her
color is brown dun or Brunnblakk in Norwegian. This lovely mare was bred by Orville and
Anita Unrau, of Anvil Acres. Her claim to fame so far was surviving a
cougar attack as a youngster. She is an excellent mover and
has a very outgoing and busy personality. She wants to be included and
in the middle of everything that is happening on the farm. Jansy has
just started riding and driving spring of 2006.
She is a
beautiful girl, with a busy and confident disposition. She is a full
sister to Judit and Marit. Many thanks to
the Unrau's for the opportunity of purchasing this fine filly!

Marit is a form of Margaret in Norwegian, it is pronounced as "merit". Her
color is gray dun or Graablakk in Norwegian. Marit should grow to be a
very nice gray gal, with a strong riding and driving
future. She is very smart!
Marit is a
beautiful girl, with a calm and gentle disposition. She is a full sister
to Judit and Jansy. Many thanks to
the Unrau's for the opportunity of purchasing this fine filly!
